Yes, it’s a government job but not a pure government job there are some limitations as compared to a normal central government employee. To clear doubts I have mentioned some rules from ” Department of Posts, Gramin Dak Sevaks (Conduct and Engagement) Rules, 2020 “.

1. GDS means Gramin Dak Sevak
2. It’s a permanent job for 65 years. However, according to Rule 8 (1), if a Sevak has not completed more than three years of continuous engagement since their initial appointment, their engagement may be terminated at any time. This termination can occur through a written notice given by either the Sevak to the Engaging Authority, or by the Engaging Authority itself. Additionally, the notice can also be issued by any Authority that the Engaging Authority is subordinate to, or by any other Authority authorized by the Government through a general or special order, specifically pertaining to the Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS).

3. According to Rule 3a (V) A GDS shall be outside the Civil Service of the Union and as per Rule 3a (VI) A GDS shall not claim to be at par with the central government employees.

4. But you will get your salary based on TRCA along with Central Dearness Allowances & the percentage of DA is the same compared to Central Govt. Employees. Currently, the percentage of Central DA is 50% in 2024.

Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS) occupy positions that are considered Govt. Civil posts, but they operate outside the framework of the regular Civil Services of the Union of India. The GDS (Conduct and Engagement) Rules, 2020, govern their employment. It’s important to note that GDS does not receive all the benefits that are typically enjoyed by civil servants. However, one significant aspect is that GDS positions offer 100% job security after completing a period of three years. Once this milestone is reached, individuals are provided with permanent appointment letters, solidifying their employment. Additionally, there is an opportunity for GDS to advance in their careers and become Multi Tasking Staff (MTS) through departmental exams. This promotion pathway allows for professional growth and development within the organization.
